The representation of family is very curious since only recently the media has explore alternatives to the more traditional heterosexual middle class white family.
It is refreshing to see a show like "Shameless" that presents a group of characters in a dysfunctional family dynamic where the father is a drunk the older sister takes care of all the rest of the siblings( many of them very young) living in a house on the edge of extreme poverty. Or the film The kids are alright where Anette Benning and Julianne Moore play a middle age gay couple with teenage children.
But one can only think of social engineering when it took so long for these examples of family dynamics to be represented respectfully in the big and small screens. Food for thought!!
