These are quotes taken from a book and an essay on the subject of the Japanese anime movie Akira. Wether or not I decide to elaborate about said cultural text in my essay remains to be seen. Among other reasons, this is a very complex subject which I do not believe I am ready to explore at this stage. That said I found excerpts of academic writing.about this exhilarating film that, for the purpose of this assignment work particularly well.
Quote taken from the journal: Rebuilding Neo-Tokyo: The search for normality in the apocalypse of Akira. Essay by S.T. Cartledge. https://themanifold.wordpress.com
“Where Akira is concerned with politics and power in post-war Japan, Grave of the Fireflies is concerned with the individual experiences of trauma, and a nostalgic view of the past.”
This quote is useful since it elaborates on the impact of the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the Japanese popular culture even after all those years have passed which is a key point of interest I am trying to pursue in my essay.
Quote from Takashi Murakami's essay Little boy collected in the book Little boy:Then art of Japan's exploding subculture.page 111 /Japan society, New York/Yale University press London.
The Image of Kaneda and the others waving a "Greater Tokyo empire of Akira" flag , with none of the conviction that accompanied brandishments of the former imperial flag of Japan seems to mock our current Japanese Nation of Children.
Selected this quote because it reflects the state of mind in the Japan of the 80's and 90's in regards to the sociopolitical and cultural areas. It feels like a good starting point in analyzing how they approach story telling and their difference with the west in that regard.
