Before I elaborate further on my engagement with the Critical Perspectives subject a brief explanation is in order. Even though I would love to write down on my blog every Thursday, I simply am unable to do so. Because of my workload in the other subjects I am engaging with at the moment I will write my thoughts on the lectures whenever. That does not mean I will neglect the blog, it just means I will not be writing every Thursday after the lecture but when I am able. That being said, let's dive into shall we?
Right after the reading group weeks we had our first lecture in the Music Room in Ashton Court. The marvelous location was impressive to look at both from the outside and the inside. After the initial wonder of the building we were introduced to the assessment deadline and the work required.
Said work involved producing an essay critically analyzing a cultural text, an academic poster for the essay and this blog.
After that we were told about Creativity as well as what modernism meant for the creative individual. Popular culture was starting to be considered vain while "avant- garde" practice was becoming more concerned with the innovative, introverted and the radical.
I learned that the creative industries combined the ideas of creativity wit economic growth something (I personally don't always agree with this because the creative endeavor should no be restricted by any other parameter than the artist's vision. )
I learned that pop culture was often used to slowly establish acceptable social values and attitudes. in Nazi Germany being used to spread hatred and a sense of toxic national pride( Similar to what Ukip is doing to Britain now days). In America, however, popular culture was used to maintain social authority and consumer culture.
