The act of making or even editing historical events was treated today in class. The fat that events are transformed and accommodated to serve an agenda or ideology is a matter of concern. But regardless of my opinion it is a phenomenon more common than one might believe. One example of this manipulation has being the story of how Florida came to be a part of the United States.
When I was A child i was told in primary school that the invasion of La Havana by the British 1762 was repelled by the bravery of the "criollos" or militias comprised by locals. But in reality, what transpired was the opposite. La Havana was taken under a siege and was delivered back to the Spanish Empire under the treaty of Paris in 1763 in exchange for La Florida.
I presume that the reason behind such fallacy was to teach me and my fellow primary students a sense of national pride, as well as the type of macho bravery that is constantly exhibited in communist propaganda.
There was no mention of the Treaty of Paris or the details of the siege.
Only of the bravery ad the sacrifice after the Spaniards fled.
This is a clear example of what was discussed in class about the use of manipulation of historical events in pursuit of an agenda.
